WELCOME TO THE
999 ECO ADVENTURE
The 2012 999 Eco Adventure will take place on the 22nd September in the Peak District National Park. The event will start and finish at Glossop Sailing Club, Torside Reservoir Woodhead Road Glossop SK13 1HX.
The Peak District National Park is one of the most beautiful and popular visitor destinations in all of Britain. Here you will find breathtaking scenery, wonderful wildlife, and a myriad of things to do and see. For the purposes of the event, The Peak District’s off-road network of cycling trails is ideal for beginners as well as experienced mountain bikers. There is a vast network of paths designed for people to run/walk along which take them up and over the most scenic tops in the area. For the canoeing section there are numerous reservoirs, canals and rivers to choose from which will accommodate experienced as well as beginner paddlers. The Peak District area will also provide an ideal location for some more interesting and exciting mystery tasks to challenge competitors along the way.
More details for the event will follow soon, however should you wish to enter now click here. Below is a summary of the 2011 event along with details of the winning teams.
Emergency Service staff from all over the UK gathered in the small village of Llangors in the Brecon Beacons on Saturday 10th September to take part in the 2011 999 Eco Adventure. The weekend was wet and windy with gale force winds blowing across the high peaks in the area. This did not deter anyone however as a total of 128 competitors took part between the 3 levels of the event.
Teams from the fun category found themselves mountain biking on single track roads and muddy trails with a mystery task thrown in which saw them having to remove and replace the tubing from their tyre at race speed! This was followed by a run through the scenic countryside around Llangors Lake. Their suffering ended with a canoe on the lake and a half mile 3-legged run (with one person blindfolded) back to the finish line.
The intermediate teams day started with a short run to Llangors Lake followed by a choppy canoe between buoys. They also participated in the 3-legged (one blindfolded) run back to the start before the real work began. Here they picked up their mountain bikes and headed uphill towards the Black Mountains. After cycling through a combination of fields, single track roads and steep rocky tracks they left their bikes with a member of staff and set off on foot. The running section this year was particularly challenging as it involved several steep climbs which would bring them back at their bikes. Then they were off cycling again on the final section back to the finish line.
The format of the advanced race was the same as the intermediate category, without the blindfold 3-legged run though!! After a long canoe teams were also off on their mountain bikes towards the Black Mountains. Although being in the advanced category they found themselves having to cycle further uphill!! They then dropped their bikes with a member of staff and went for a long run all the way to the highest peak in the area Wan Fach. They were then directed down the very scenic ridge on the opposite side which took them back to their bikes. They then followed the same route back to the finish line.
The day didnt end when all teams crossed the finish line! After a quick shower to remove all the mud everyone was back at the community centre for the Post Race Party. Here everyone enjoyed a hog roast, the event prize giving, a live band and lots and lots of beer!!
